SO MISS NICKY HOWARD AND I DECIDED TO SPLIT THE COST ON MATERIALS AND MAKE SOME EXFOLIATING FELTED SOAP. COST FOR EACH OF US WAS AROUND 10 DOLLARS BUT THE EXPERIENCE... PRICELESS.
THE GREAT THING ABOUT FELTED SOAP IS THAT IS ACTUALLY GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE IT HELPS THE LIFE OF YOUR SOAP AND IT IS A GREAT NATURAL GENTLE EXFOLIATE FOR YOUR SKIN.
YOU CAN FELT STORE BOUGHT SOAP TOO BUT WE WANTED TO MAKE OUR OWN SOAP FOR THIS PROJECT.
A BIG THANKS TO MISS NICKY FOR HER HELP ;D
MATERIALS (MAKES OVER A DOZEN PALM SIZED SOAPS)
- pour and melt soap: We used Glycerine Soap Base Cubes from hobby lobby. Purchase online here
- metal or silicon mold: We used a small cupcake tin
- scents for soap: We used honey almond and plumaria purchased at hobby lobby. Purchase online here
- wool roving felt: We used the rainbow pack. Purchase online here
- warm to hot water
- a kitchen cutting board with texture (optional)
- oven (some way to melt the soap)
DIRECTIONS
1. PUT CUBES INTO DESIRED MOLD AND SET IN OVEN AT 250... WATCH THE SOAP MELT... TAKES AROUND 5-10 MINUTES.
2. USING OVEN MIT REMOVE SOAP FROM OVEN AND ADD DESIRED AMOUNT OF FRAGRANCE TO EACH... WE USED ABOUT 5-7 DROPS (I LIKE MY SOAPS TO BE STRONGLY SCENTED). LET COOL AROUND 10 MINUTES AND POP INTO FREEZER FOR A MINUTE OR TWO FOR EASY RELEASE. SOAPS SHOULD POP RIGHT OUT... OR JUST SLAM ON COUNTER A FEW TIMES LOL.
3. PULL TUFTS OF YOUR ROVING AND SEPARATE FIBERS EVENLY TO CREATE A THIN BLANKET THAT YOU WILL WRAP AROUND YOUR SOAP
4. WRAP ONE COLOR AROUND SOAP... BE SURE TO COVER ALL OF SURFACE AND PINCH TO HOLD IN PLACE
5. REPEAT WITH 2 MORE COLORS OR THE SAME COLOR
6. KEEP ROVING PINCHED AROUND THE SOAP WHILE HOLDING UNDER LOW PRESSURE WARM TO HOT WATER.
7. BEGIN FELTING BY HOLDING SIDES OF SOAP IN PALMS OF HANDS AND SLIGHTLY ROTATING WITH LIGHT PRESSURE... DO THIS ON ALL SIDES. SLOW AND GENTLE AT FIRST. TAKING AROUND 3-5 MINUTES.
8. SUDS SHOULD START TO FORM AND FIBER SHOULD FEEL LIKE IT'S BEGINNING TO STICK TO THE SOAP. APPLY MORE PRESSURE AND BEGIN ROTATING SOAP IN HANDS... BE CAREFUL TO NOT RUB FIBER OFF.
9. KEEP RUBBING THE SOAP... FIBER WILL STILL FEEL KIND OF LOOSE BUT SHOULD BE SECURE AROUND THE SOAP. AFTER ABOUT 5 MORE MINUTES I GOT A LITTLE FRUSTRATED BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE FIBER SHOULD BE GLUED TO THE SOAP SO I LET IT SIT UNTIL SUDS DISAPPEARED. WHEN I CAME BACK THE DRYING SHRUNK THE FIBER STIFF AROUND THE SOAP AND I JUST RUBBED IT ON THE CUTTING BOARD TO REALLY BOND THE FIBERS.
10. WALLAAA YOU HAVE FELTED SOAP FOR ALL YOUR FRIENDS!
